Blocked Drain Prevention Tips:
Here at Soul Plumbing, we understand the frustrations of having a blocked drain, so we have come up with 4 simple tips that will help prevent those unwanted clogs and blockages.
1. Do not pour fats and oils down the kitchen sink
After cooking and finishing meals, do not pour your oil, fats or butter down the kitchen sink. It may seem like they are easily washed away, however these fats and oils can get stuck in the pipes, build up over time and can lead to an eventual blocked drain. If you do not reuse or have a place for leftover oil, you can soak up the oil with some tissues and put it in a small bag or container and then place it in your kitchen bin, so that the oil does not spill in the bin and create more of a mess. Just ensure that the oil is not hot when you are disposing of it in the bin.
2. Do not flush sanitary items down the toilet
Do not flush sanitary items, baby wipes or anything other than toilet paper down the toilet. It may seem tempting due to the convenience however it is not worth the risk of getting a blocked toilet.
3. Use a hair catcher in the shower
Although tiny strands of hair seem harmless when going down the drain, the build up of many hair strands over time can be a nightmare, leading to clogged shower drains. You can purchase hair catchers and place them over your shower drain in order to stop these hair strands from building up in your drain pipes, thereby preventing you from getting annoying clogged drains.
4. Do not plant trees near your drain pipes
Do not risk planting a tree outside your house if it is in close proximity to your underground pipes. The further away from the underground pipes, the better because although it may not seem that the tree roots will reach the pipes, tree roots can sense water and can grow long lengths to reach the water in pipes. If the tree roots reach the pipes, it could block or damage the pipes underground.
We know that these tips might seem simple, but sometimes we need to have reminders to take these simple measures, so that we can prevent plumbing disasters that cost time and money.

What Can I Do If I Have a Blocked Drain?
Drainage issues can take on many forms, but the common ones involve clogged toilets, sinks, and floor drains. We do not recommend that you use drain clearing products which claim to unblock drains. When you pour their product down the drain pipes because these chemicals can be too harsh on your drain and could lead to damage such as drain corrosion, leaking pipes or burst pipes – particularly in older pipes.
If your toilet clogged up, or any other drain blocked up, your best tool for the job is the plunger. Regular cup plungers are most effective for clogged sinks or drains, whereas plungers with flanged bottoms are best for backed-up toilets. After some stretching, proceed with the plunging. Get a good rhythm going, and plunge for several times. This should clear up the blockage.
If you’ve sweated it out with the plunger but your drain remains clogged, the next best step is to call Soul Plumbing – Your blocked drains expert in Brisbane!
